Evidence Based Decision Support System for Predicting Probability of Disease using Snomed Clinical Terminology

Abstract :

SNOMED CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms) is a clinical terminology containing concepts, with unique meanings and formal logic-based definitions, organized into hierarchies. It is an international standard, scientifically validated clinical content, enables consistent representation of clinical terminologies in Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR). The development and maintenance of SNOMED CT relies on Description Logics (DL) and its reasoning services. DL are a family of formal knowledge representation languages, dedicated to representing information about the world in a form that a computer system can utilize to solve complex tasks as diagnosing a medical condition. The clinical content of SNOMED CT includes diagnoses, clinical findings, clinical observations, drug products, organisms, specimen types, and body structures, surgical and non-surgical procedures. In clinical research typically involves the analysis of data from well-defined and homogenous groups of patients with a specific disease, at a specific stage, receiving similar treatments and often without significant co-morbidities. The data may be captured prospectively or retrieved retrospectively. A wise implementation of SNOMED CT in an optimised way within a Virtual Health Record or in an Electronic Health Record will be supported an effective and fruitful clinical research. Before SNOMED CT, there was no standard for capturing clinical terms in Electronic Medical Record and Electronic Health Record. Hence, the clinical terms capturing during the electronics case sheets preparation is varies to doctors. The main hurdle to prepare a standard AI model for detection or prediction of disease is unstructured data capturing. SNOMED CT featured with processable meaning to an EHR or EMR by enabling meaningful representation of clinical information and it ensure high quality health care. SNOMED CT is a key component in effective solutions to enable meaning-based retrieval from growing volumes of clinical information and to support interoperable information exchange. Optimised implementation of SNOMED CT in EHR or EMR supports evidence- based healthcare predictions using AI techniques by enabling links between clinical records and clinical protocols.
